2016 - First Aerial Application Update

The first aerial larvicide application was successfully completed on April 13th and the timing was very good to control the snow melt and the first spring mosquito larva. There was a great deal of precipitation and flooding that occurred prior to the larvicide application. While in the air, it was observed that there was a significant amount of standing water; more than has been seen in quite a few years. While the helicopter was applying the granular larvicide, the target sites were being checked on the ground to ensure that the targeted sites were being hit with the product.

In order to ensure that the mosquito habitat near residents in the (3) communities was treated thoroughly , a larger area than usual was larvicided. There were [81 ha] treated in Nairn, [36 ha] in Ailsa Craig and [197 ha] treated around Parkhill. Spray maps can also be viewed on this website. A total of [314 ha] were treated. The areas will continue to be monitored , and if it is deemed necessary, there is money budgeted for a second aerial treatment .
